Every year the UK discards large amounts of wrapping paper, and while some can be recycled, not all of it can be. Additionally according to recyclenow, not all councils will accept wrapping paper for recycling, so a lot of it is ending up in landfill; a better solution could be re-useable options such as a fabric wrapping.
So for this year why not try taking inspiration from the ancient Japanese art of Furoshiki which is wrapping gifts using fabric, and feel good about doing a bit to care for planet earth.
Fabric wrapping can be as simple as taking a piece of fabric, either one that is hemmed such as a silky scarf or one that won’t easily fray such as felt. Then simply wrap as you traditionally would with paper but tie into a knot at the end. Instructions are available all over the internet, like these from Better Homes & Garden.
You can also buy furoshiki kits and attend workshops to learn all the skills necessary to transform your wrapping habits this holiday time. Although this can involve an initial outlay, you or your recipient can reuse the fabric wrapping year after year which will save money in the long run.
Unleash your creativity, have fun and do some good at the same time!
