“Almost all goods are made apart from the life of those who use them: we are not responsible for them, our will has no part in their production…” (Morris, in Adamson 2018: 148)
The above quote was first recorded in 1888 by William Morris, a polymath and pioneer of the Arts & Crafts movement in Victorian Britain. Although the quote is over 100 years old, his concerns are still relevant today. Morris highlights a facet of the industrialised process and later mass production that is interesting to consider; the physical, intellectual, and emotional separation that results in customers having no idea where, how, or by whom clothing is made.
Above is an excerpt that I wrote for Chapter 17 of a newly published book "Accelerating Sustainability in Fashion, Clothing and Textiles" co-authored with Carra Santos & Kadian Gosler.
This is the first time my work has been published in a book and as such I'm excited to share the news of its release with you!
This all came about from the 2021 Sustainable Innovation conference, hosted by UCA, where I presented a paper "Crafting a connection". The theme of connection and the potential of craft to play a part in reconnecting us, which first emerged for me in my MA Innovation Management studies at Central Saint Martins, is explored in this chapter and merged with themes including agency & behaviour from my co-authors research.
Attending the initial conference was a brilliant experience-there were so many inspirational speakers who have also contributed to this book, please do check it out!
The book is available to buy from Routledge here
